Socio-Economic Strengthening

Poverty is one of the main drivers that force children to the streets. At CRO, we work to break this cycle by empowering families and communities with the knowledge, resources, and tools they need to overcome socio-economic challenges.

Through economic empowerment, we address root causes that lead children to street life—ensuring they can grow up in stable, supportive homes.

What We Do

Income Generating Activities (IGAs)

To alleviate poverty among households of street-connected children, CRO provides seed capital for small businesses. Before receiving support, families undergo business skills training to ensure sustainability and growth.

Our staff conduct regular follow-up visits to:

  • Offer technical guidance

  • Monitor progress

  • Encourage reinvestment of profits

As a result, families are now able to afford daily meals, pay rent, and meet their children’s basic needs—creating a more stable environment for the child.

Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs) & Self-Help Groups (SHGs)

Since 2008, CRO has supported the formation of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) within the poorest slum communities. These groups promote:

  • Weekly savings and access to small loans

  • Sustainable micro-financing through a shared community pot

  • Financial literacy, business skills, and empowerment

Members, mostly women, pool their savings and lend it out at low interest to support small business ventures. The system is self-sustaining and builds trust, accountability, and financial discipline.

In every meeting, SHG members also engage in important discussions about:

  • Children’s rights and education

  • Nutrition and hygiene

  • HIV/AIDS prevention and care

  • Parenting and household wellbeing

These groups not only improve economic resilience but also boost confidence, self-esteem, and social solidarity.

Women’s and Men’s Support Groups

CRO operates women’s and men’s clubs in slum communities like Namatala, Masese, Barogole, and Nyendo. These clubs equip parents and guardians with practical knowledge and emotional support to improve family wellbeing and child care.

Club topics include:

  • Primary healthcare and hygiene

  • Adult literacy and discipleship

  • Vocational and skills training

  • Income-generating activities

  • Parenting and sharing best practices

These clubs build community, strengthen parenting capacity, and promote long-term household transformation.
