This year IDAC 2023 was held under the theme: “The Rights of Child in a Digital environment”, which fits in the current world situation where the world is highly overlowed with much technological advancements.
These changes have gradual impact on a child as he/she either faced with tougher decision of fitting into the system or being ignored by caretakers as a result of technological engagement.
As NGOs, we request the government of Uganda to carry out sensitization of the masses on the Laws that concern children in this country since many people including parents, guardians and other caretakers know little or nothing regarding their responsibility towards children.
Hajjat Aisha Kateregga, the chairperson of Human Rights Commission in Greater Masaka submitted that though child protection laws exist, many parents and other caretakers know nothing about child rights which leads them to ignorantly violate or abuse them.
In his communication at CRO Masaka, the Country Director, CRO Uganda, Mr. Nabitiri Paul, argued Uganda government to implement the child protection laws in order to deal with parents who neglect their children hence ending up on the streets which creates a further burden of restoring, rehabilitation and resettlement.
Mrs. Nkoleta Adaj Ojur, CRO Masaka project manager, tasked local government to also implement the by-laws that are enacted concerning children otherwise the children are continually abused and neglected – which exposes them to health, physical and emmotioal suffering.
Many children in Uganda still end up on the street as a result of family violence, extreme poverty, neglect and abuse. These children end up being subjected to exploitation through child labor, drug and sexual abuse, criminal acts, unwanted pregnancies and exposure to diseases and other life-threatening situations.
CRO Uganda strives to restore, rehabilitate and empower children in street- connected situations so that they can have a productive and responsible future, through education support, food provision health and psyco-social support.
