The role CRO Uganda in restoration of children who are in street connected situations.

What We're Dealing with

As many as 7,000 children between the ages of 7-17 years, wander on the streets of Mbale, Masaka, Lira and Jinja without care, parental guidance, shelter, and other basic needs of life.

These children have neither access to education nor skills training and are likely to grow up in poverty and constitute societal nuisance.

CRO is concerned about the dilemma of children in street situation, the early exposure to abuses, the harmful effects of street life and therefore - how they can be provided with a better future.

Our Approach

theyear2017

We cannot thank you enough for being part of our cause – Rebuilding the lives of children on the streets; for the year 2017 and just as John Holmes says, “There is no exercise better for the heart than reaching down and lifting people up

Street Outreach

This year, CRO reached out to 1,071 children on the streets in the 4 project areas. Children were on the streets due to extreme poverty, family neglect and child abuse in their homes.

Rehabilitation

247 children were rehabilitated and are ready to join formal education and vocational skills training in 2018. This will mark the beginning of another journey for them to become responsible and productive in society.

Formal School

In 2017, we supported 614 children in primary and secondary schools through provision of tuition and scholastic materials which ensured their retention in schools and hence more street children having the opportunity to attend school.

Tertiary Education

29 Young people attended tertiary institutions and with your support, six (6) of them graduated in  Law, Business Administration, Nursing, Development Studies, Social Work & Social administration, and in Education.

Vocational Training

CRO trained 127 youths in different vocational skills such as catering, tailoring, carpentry, welding, Hairdressing, Mechanics,Electronics and agriculture. They have gained skills for self-reliance.

Recreation activities

469 boys and 339 girls have participated in various recreation activities (sports, MDD) as a way of boosting self-esteem, building talents, enhancing team spirit and speeding up recovery.

Nutrition support

CRO supported 734 young people with meals to improve their health, sustain them in schools and to enable them participate in CRO programs.

Health Care

The CRO clinics operated throughout the year. More than 5,000 cases were treated with good progress while 197 severe cases were referred to district hospitals. Unfortunately, 2 boys passed on in Mbale due to poisoning and HIV/AIDS.

Re-integration

CRO believes that re-integrating street children into families is a long-lasting solution. During the year,188 boys and 84 girls were re-integrated within their families and are being followed-up to ensure their retention at home.

Economic Strengthening

Extreme poverty has remained the prime cause of children coming on the streets. 1800 poor women have been economically strengthened through the Self Help Groups to improve their livelihood. This has resulted in preventing more children from coming on the streets.

Advocacy

CRO continued to advocate for the rights of vulnerable children. 19 advocacy meetings were conducted with local leaders to enforce legislation on child protection and to enact new by-laws to protect children from abuse. Community members were also trained on child rights, child protection and positive parenting in order to observe child rights in their communities.
Finally,on behalf of all children, staff and Management of CRO, we wish you a joyful holiday season and a fruitful New Year 2018. We look forward to working with you again to rebuild the lives of children rescued from the streets.

THE GIFT OF LOVE. THE GIFT OF PEACE. THE GIFT OF HAPPINESS. MAY ALL THESE BE YOURS THIS SEASON.

With great appreciation,
