Education
Education is central to giving children a real path out of street life. Once a child has been through rehabilitation, CRO sponsors their education, whether that means primary or secondary school, university, or vocational training. Children receive support with school fees and scholastic materials, and our social workers carry out regular school visits and follow ups to make sure a child is actually attending, keeping up and settling in well.
Not every child arrives ready for the classroom, or comes to us having never been to school at all. That is why rehabilitation includes catch-up education in basic literacy and numeracy, giving children the foundation they need before they can realistically return to formal schooling.
Skills Training
For children who have never attended school, dropped out early, or simply prefer a practical path, CRO offers vocational skills training so they can build an income without needing a formal education.
- A free six month training in carpentry or tailoring, giving young people a recognised, marketable skill.
- Hairdressing and other shorter courses, depending on interest and opportunity.
- Farming skills, with children helping out on CRO's own farms, learning practical agricultural work alongside growing food for the centres.
Empowerment
Finishing a course or leaving school is not the end of our support. CRO helps young people take the next step into actually earning a living.
- Start-up support to launch a small business, such as initial capital for a shoe stand and stock, so a young person can start selling and generating their own income.
- Continued follow up after school or training, helping young people stay on track as they move into work or self-employment.
Our impact in 2025
475 children were supported to access education, 276 in primary school, 76 in secondary school, and 123 in tertiary or vocational training. Jinja led the way, with Masaka and Jinja together driving the strongest results.
